Style D consists of a spiral wound gasket with loops (usually 2) added to the O.D. of the gasket and dimensioned to fit over two diametrically opposite flange bolts for centering purposes. Style D spiral wound gaskets are not generally recommended for use in applications where pressures are in excess of 600 psi. It is not widely used or as popular as the Style CG spiral wound gasket, with its outer metal ring functioning as a centering, anti-blowout device as well as a compression stop. The Style D spiral wound gasket was originally designed for shipboard use in congested, overhead piping systems, however the Style CG spiral wound gasket should be used where possible.
When Style D spiral wound gaskets are required and are not standard catalog items, special winding mandrels must be purchased.
